About KCC

What is KCOC? Who are we? What do we aim for?

The Kichwa Community of Chicago is a non-profit community organization promoting cultural values with a strong and distinctive vision for individuals who are native Kichwa of Ecuador.

Among all the nationalities and peoples across the Americas, the Kichwa settled in northern Ecuador have been recognized for their entrepreneurship and trade (mindalaes), traveling to unimaginable places across the four cardinal points with their crafts, music, and most importantly, their culture and tradition.

Chicago has not been an exception as a destination for the Kichwa. In the 1980s, the first families from the communities of Quinchuqui, Peguche, Cotama, La Joya, Agato, Ilumán, Cotacachi, Otavalo, and Ibarra arrived. Over time, due to various socio-economic reasons, these families established themselves permanently in the city, now having been there for over 40 years. However, the Kichwa community has grown in family numbers, bringing with it new generations, and has managed to preserve its identity and traditions through cultural expressions and celebrations with deep spiritual meaning.

Thus, from this space, the Kichwa community has sought to maintain community practices such as organizing cultural activities, celebrating Kichwa festivals like Inti Raymi, Mushuk Nina, and others of community character.

Mission

The Kichwa community of northern Ecuador forges its roots in the city of Chicago. Over time we have seen the need to create a non-profit organization Kichwa Community of Chicago, committed to maintaining and making visible our traditions, identity and ancient culture. We believe in the ability of each individual to build a community with identity values and leave a legacy for our children to be transmitted from generation to generation and forge SUMAK KAWSAY (the good life). Promoting initiatives to achieve the goals and objectives of this organization.

Vision

To become a community organization with solid foundations and identity, empower children and young people to rescue and keep our culture alive, and become recognized as a Kichwa people in public, private, governmental, national and international bodies, and with related organizations. Ensure the maintenance of community peace and harmony, supporting members in various socio-economic situations.

KCC History

The Kichwa Community of Chicago (KCC) was officially established in 2022, born from the vision and dedication of a group of leaders committed to preserving and uplifting the identity, culture, and unity of the Kichwa people in Chicago. Over the course of its first two years, KCC’s inaugural executive board laid the foundational groundwork for what has become a vibrant and growing hub of cultural pride, community support, and intergenerational connection. During this formative period, the board focused on building trust and forging partnerships with local organizations and city-wide resources, ensuring that the voices and needs of the Kichwa community would be heard, recognized, and supported within the larger fabric of Chicago. Today, Kichwa Community of Chicago is building relationships with the Chicago History Museum to have more visibility into the Kichwa community that has been residing and growing in Chicago for several decades and aspects of our culture from our vestment to spiritual beliefs.
