Department of Education

The department of education, led by Miriam Teran, is composed of 4 total team members. Together they collaborate to develop programming for education-based events for community members of all ages for the 2024-2026 cycle. Each department is also heavily involved in the development and execution of major KCC events to ensure programming is beneficial to our members and objective of maintaining Kichwa culture alive in younger generations.

Get to Know Our Team

  • Miriam Teran is originally from Peguche, Ecuador and works as a merchant.

  • My name is Gladys de la Torre. I am a volunteer in the Education Department and a Community Coordinator at the Kichwa Community of Chicago , in collaboration with the Chicago History Museum.

    City of Origin: I was born in Ibarra, Ecuador, and I belong to the Kichwa Otavalo people.

    Role Objective / What I Like About KCC: I enjoy being part of the Kichwa Community Organization because it is a space where we share our roots, strengthen our identity as Indigenous people in the diaspora, and support our families through cultural empowerment.

    Additional Information: I have lived in Chicago for over 20 years.

    I was trained as an agricultural engineer in my home country, and I studied Humanities in the United States.

    I am currently writing the book “Memorias en el Viento” ,which includes a special chapter about Kichwa migrant women in the diaspora.

    I enjoy writing, organizing cultural events, dancing Sanjuanitos, and creating community spaces.

    I continue working on cultural education and emotional healing projects with the organization Healing to Action, especially with migrant and Indigenous women.

    Estoy radicando en la ciudad de Chicago desde el 2002. Desde ese tiempo he compartido con la comunidad por que me gusta mi cultura y trasmitir mis tradiciones.

  • Mi nombre es Hilda Lema, nacida en Otavalo, Ecuador. Soy mujer Kichwa Mindalae de Otavalo Imbabura.

    Hoy formo parte del Departamento de Educación de la Organización KCC periodo 2024-2026.

2025 Projects and Initiatives

2025 Community Census

The Department of Education launched the first official community census in order to obtain data on the community members for better understanding of community needs and collaborative opportunities with other partners based on member traits. The census is open to all Kichwa identifying people residing in Chicago and accessible online for currently registered members and via request for non-KCC members.
